Carfin Pilgrimage

Having just returned from Carfin Grotto for the second time in a fortnight and having enjoyed both weeks regardless of the weather difference can I say that although we had a good turnout both weeks it could have been so much better at both masses. We must be very careful Brothers as there are numerous groups looking for pilgrimages to Carfin and if we dont get a better attendance we may lose our date to one of these other groups. PLEASE BROTHERS WE MUST SUPPORT THESE PILGRIMAGES BETTER NEXT YEAR.

Carfin 13/09/09

I was at Carfin last Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was interesting to read Brother Robert's comments. It was my first time at a KSC pilgrimage so I had no previous experience to gauge it against.

Speaking to some Brothers before the rosary procession and they were saying the numbers were declining rapidly year on year.

Without seeming rude it's obvious that the vast majority of our membership are advanced in years and there seems to be no one coming through to replace them.

It will be interesting to see what happens at this years Supreme Council as I feel the order is at a critical crossroads.

Many Councils are so low in numbers that they are basically ineffective.

The EColumba newsletter is a move in the right direction but out website is sadly lacking in any up to date information that may catch the attention of anyone looking for information on the Order.

Carfin Pilgrimage

Hi Johnny,

I wouldnt necessarily judge on the attendance or lack of, younger members at Carfin. It's one of the unfortunate issues of being younger-ish in age that we are still working at so many have to fit events round, family, other commitments and work.

Actually, from the past most recent initiation ceremonies, there certainly seems to be a small increase in younger members coming in to the Order.

What we have to be careful of, is immediately pouncing on them and demanding commitment especially at officer level etc. This is a huge risk because we are desperate to fill posts etc.

Speaking from my own experience, and as a Grand Knight, i cannot commit fully to all the events i'd like to, even those i have a duty to attend to.

I feel that when i cannot attend, that i'm letting my council down and therefore they suffer. I am, however, fortunate enough that my Council give me full support and always step in when required.

So it doesnt necessarily need be a negative thing. Encouraging membership even to the extent where individuals cannot commit fully to begin with cannot be a barrier to membership can only serve to benefit us.

I encourage all try to find out what barriers are perceved by potential members of our Order and think about ways we can overcome these.
